fffc - r19.4 Losing you

„Hey.“ Casey was beaming all over when he finally found Zeke a bit offside, smoking a cigarette. „What are you doing here so alone?“
Zeke looked up, shrugging. „Probably I should better have stayed home.“
The smile on Casey's face vanished; he dropped down beside his friend, putting an arm around his shoulder. „But it's graduation day; you should be proud of yourself. You will go to college in a few weeks. This is great!“
„Without you, I wouldn't have made it.“
„Oh stop it, don't hide your light under a bush. You have a brilliant mind. All I did was to push you in the right direction.“ He grabbed for Zeke's hand, trying to pull him up. „C'mon, now, stop moping around. My mom has already asked for you; she wants you to come with us for dinner.“
Zeke sighed and closed his eyes. „Good God, Casey. Go and tell her than you couldn't find me. I am not a very good amuser today.“
„It's because of your parents, isn't it? What a shame that they aren't here at least today.“
„They send a generous check and a greeting card; I didn't have expected anything else.“
„So, why don't you want to celebrate a bit with people who care for you?“
„You don't get it. This doesn't make it easier for me. It's only some weeks, and you will move to Boston and...“
When Zeke kept quiet, Casey frowned. „And what?“
Zeke shrugged. „I always knew that you wouldn't stay here in Herrington. But now, I'm afraid I don't want to lose you.“
„Ähm.“ For a moment Casey felt lost for words. „You are talking as if this is the end of everything. It's only a few hundred miles. We can chat every day. And I will come back here often enough to see my parents. You can visit me over the weekends, and we will go club hopping. I've heard Boston has lots of interesting clubs.
Zeke smiled weakly. „It's MIT, Case; the world is open for you now. I am sure you will make new friends soon enough.“
„Do you think I am that shallow?“ Casey looked offended.
„Some weeks ago I did ask you if you would link to share an apartment with me. In Boston. I guess you remember your answer; it was as plain as day that this is a no-go for you.“
„Don't be stupid. You can't move to Boston when you have the chance to go to college in Akron. Of course, I would like to share a room with you. But I won't be the one who ruins your future.“
„Oh.“ Zeke kept quiet for a moment, finally he smirked. „Then maybe we got each other wrong. I never planned to give up college. When you talked about your plans to go to MIT or Columbia, I did send application letters to several Colleges in New York and Boston, too.“
„You... what? Why did you never tell me?“
„I wasn't sure if this would be okay for you. Then you told me that you already have a dorm at the MIT campus and you looked so happy and said, that you can't wait to leave everything behind. It didn't feel right to stay in your way.“
Stunned Casey shook his head. „But I was only talking about the hellhole of town, the closemindedness around. At MIT I won't be a strange nerd anymore but a geek between other geeks.“ Suddenly an idea crossed his mind. „Did they accept you?“
„Who?“
„College in Boston, did they accept you?“
Zeke hesitated shortly. „Yeah,“ he finally answered. „First they wrote that it is already too late for this year, but some days ago I got a second letter from the University of Massachusetts that I am in if I still want.“
„And of course you did agree.“ Casey grinned all over his face.
„Not yet,“ Zeke admitted. „I wasn't sure anymore if this is a good idea. MIT is your chance for a new start."
„Zeke, sometimes you can be such an idiot. MIT is great, but MIT and you and me, together in Boston, this is so much better.
C'mon, we need to tell my mom. She will be so relieved to hear that her little baby boy won't be all alone in the oh so big town far, far away from home.“ He laughed hilariously, and Zeke could help it but join in.
