Zeke rubbed his hands together and stepped from one foot to the other to keep himself warm. „Case...“
But the younger boy didn't take any notice of him, much too busy with taking one photo after the other from the single rose, he had discovered at the roadside. Still fully bloomed, but covered with frost. „It looks so unique,“ he babbled. „Perfect! When the photos turn out as I hope, I will make a collage out of some of them.“ Click, click. He bent closer, click again. „For my mom. She loves roses. This will be the perfect Christmas present for her. I will...“
„Casey!“
This time the annoyed voice of Zeke reached him. „Ähm, yes?“ Slightly confused, he lowered the camera and turned around.“What's wrong?“
„It's freezing cold, and I slowly turn into a chunk of ice,“ the older boy snapped. „If you think, you'll need even more pics, just tell me. There is a Starbucks some miles down the road; I will go there for a hot coffee.“
„Oh. Sorry.“ Casey looked sincerer abashed. „I only wanted to take one shot, or two. But you know, when I find an interesting photo subject I can forget the whole world around me. Why didn't you say something earlier?“
Zeke smiled, his lousy mood already gone. „Because it's somehow cute that you are such a geek.“
„Oh, thanks.“ Casey put the camera back into his backpack and turned to the GTO. „But I guess you are right, let's go home. We both need to warm up.“
„Okay. Starbucks, then.“ Zeke said while he started the motor. „My treat.“
But Casey shook his head. „Your garage. I already have some ideas in my mind how to make up for all this.“
