Title: Rites of the Before-Time
A fill for
picture_prompt_fun and
fffc advent calendars, day 24
In the before-times, the people of Guardia had a celebration called 'Christmas'. Doan had read about it in some records from the Communications Centre. The staff of the Centre had their own version of the ritual, which involved decorating the machines with shiny, fluffy string and coloured lights, placing Plants in easily visible locations and decorating them with random shiny objects on strings, then exchanging gifts and engaging in riotous hedonism. They also discussed the more intimate, cozy scenes at home, involving larger Plants, a roaring fire to huddle around, more gifts to exchange, often placed in large items of clothing for some reason. A representation of a star was often placed on top of the Plant. Outside, what looked like radioactive fallout poured down from the sky, although Doan knew that they didn't really have any of that, so maybe it was a strange fantasy of theirs? A lot of it didn't make sense. He didn't think the others would appreciate the large glowing celestial object hanging from the Plant, it would remind them too much of a certain meteor that once fell down from the sky. Anyway, they only had one Plant which was too small to decorate and was for food, not fun, so he made his own out of some random packaging and other junk he found in the Centre's cafeteria. All of the food inside was spoiled or cleaned out long ago by previous generations but some of the packets were kinda shiny. He placed the particularly shiny strips of foil on the top, in a kind of spherical blob. Making a fire would be easy - putting the damn thing out would be the hardest part - and, as for the rest of the debauched revelry, they'd do what they could, even though nobody really felt up to it any more.
