A fill for [community profile] picture_prompt_fun and [community profile] fffc advent calendars, day 9

The bicycle lay in the middle of the icy path where Ness had fallen off it. There was very little traction on the slippery surface and the wheels had suddenly skidded to one side. The boy was fine - Shield and Lifeup had seen to that - but the bike wasn't and now he was stuck in the middle of nowhere in Winters. He couldn't even get a phone signal. Fortunately, his friend had thought to come out and meet him halfway once he had failed to turn up on time. Now he was inside a warm, comfortable home with a couch and a coffee machine and a TV. He tried not to think about the rooms downstairs where all Jeff's father's experiments were kept, or the howling outside that didn't quite sound like the wind and the rattling on the windows that was growing louder. Jeff was with him. Whatever was about to happen, they could deal with it between them.

"I'm sorry I've caused you so much trouble," said Jeff, handing him another coffee on a tray.

Ness shook his head, "I was the one who decided to come. I know what the weather can be like out here. Anyway, I don't regret it, even if I did ruin my bike - you're a great host."

Jeff blushed, "Thanks. I really am grateful you came to visit."

"Well, I heard you were alone and you sounded really down, I know how much Tony means to you," said Ness, feeling a little guilty when Jeff's face immediately looked more downcast.

"He... he said he'd be back again as soon as he can, he said it was a family emergency. But now I'm worried about him and his family. I wanted to go with him and make sure everything was okay. He... he's like family to me, too!"

"I mean, you know how to operate the Sky Runner and that thing works in bad weather," said Ness, "Well... when it actually, you know, works."

"I don't know, I'm a bit worried about going near it right now, dad said he was making some improvements to it, then he forgot what he was doing for a while and now he's in Saturn Valley for some reason - he didn't leave any instructions, of course, I don't think he even had a plan for what the finished thing was going to look like..."

"Look at it this way, it can't be more dangerous than a Phase Distorter and the last one of those has been lost in time and space."

"Th... that's not very reassuring, now I'm just remembering the disasters we had with that thing!"

"C'mon, it'll be another adventure! ... Besides, the vending machine's out of Picnic Lunches and that sound outside went quiet and I don't know if that's better or worse."

Jeff sighed, "Okay, I'll start the engine running and leave a note for dad, you pack us two flasks of coffee, okay?"

Ness grinned, no longer bored.
