Through the valley, beside the river, they walked. And walked. And walked. June-Lily brought up the rear, and never proposed a rest. Astra did not complain, or even let her face shift from the unfeeling mask. Solange said nothing. It would not be heard, she supposed. Even as the daylight turned golden, and then orange. Even as the sky filled with rose and peach and delicate yellows on every cloud.
The sound came clear, a vast thunder, before the sight came into view: a dam with water rushing through gates, great gushes of foaming white.
June-Lily let out her breath in relief. "Must have rained a lot if they don't fear drought." She pointed. "The path up is that way."
Solange looked at the steepness of it, and the height the steps rose to, and quailed.
"There will be a place to sleep on top," said June-Lily.
You will be lucky, thought Solange, if we don't just curl up on the steps.
Sunset faded into dark. Moonlight came up behind them, turning the scene gray. When they finally stumbled up on the top, and the lake spread before them, reflecting the enormous moon, Solange blinked at how little it had risen.
