"There wasn't any need for you to rush, I'm afraid," said Queenie, mildly. "The average prediction came out just right. We'll be ready in three hours."
Rosalie's breath came out in a rush.
"Packs are prepared," said Nina sensibly. "And nothing new's turned up. Perhaps you would be best off taking a nap?"
Rosalie forced her breath out. With all the roisterers about, it was not like she could go anywhere. And however improbable that three undergraduates in wizardry would save the day, when every wizard in the world had to be searching, she could not risk their plan.
"We'll wake you with a half hour to spare," said Queenie, cheerfully as if they were going to buy text books and not to save the world. Rosalie nodded, went into the backroom where the coach still stood, shed her shoes, pulled the throw over her head, and reminded herself that with all the wizards in the world, at least some others had to have the notion that if no one in this world could slay the Shade, someone from another could.

Moments later, Nina was shaking her shoulder, whispering for her to get up, get up. Rosalie slid on her shoes, and Nina pushed her pack into her hands. Pulling it on, Rosalie noted Nina already wore hers. And -- she glanced at the clock. It had only been two hours.
"It worked early," whispered Nina. Rosalie tiptoed after her, feeling the same urge to silence.
Queenie, for once, was solemn as a judge. Before her stood an arch like a doorway, and through it spread a misty scene -- with the mist lit from within by orange sunset light. The towering trees could be made out clearly, the dead leaves on the grounds, the palisade fence blocking the view to the right.
Her heart started to hammer, not harder, but stronger, than before. "We did it," she said.
