"We need horses," said Astra.
"We'll have horses," said Elisabetta, walking briskly through the fair.
"I thought," said Rose-Lily, chasing after, "that they didn't have livestock at this fair."
"You're entirely right there," said Elisabetta, "but you know how the words work. If we found sawhorses, that would do."
Astra's nose wrinkled. "Sawhorses. I suppose you might actually be willing to do what needs to be done for the defeat of evil."
Elisabetta's laughter rang out, surprising her with its lightness. Yes, there was a lot riding on them, but -- "Not that far, not yet. You can doubt me still. Look!"
The carousel horse closest to them was fluorescent gaudy, a brilliantly white horse adorned with pink and green and blue, in random motifs of flags or flowers or shooting stars.
"Choose your favorite. As long as it's a horse, of course."
She herself made a beeline to her favorite: a golden horse with paler mane, adorned with white and golden lilies. Rose-Lily choose a dapple-gray, with tack set with the sun, the moon, and the stars, on deep blue. And Astra -- Astra choose a black one, with blood-red roses for ornament.
And no sooner than she mounted than Elisabetta's horse raised its head, shook its mane, and began to amble onward. She heard the clip-clop of hooves behind her, drew a deep breath, and clapped her heels to its sides. It surged.
