Her gray skirt spreading about her, Miss Jackson sat on the bench. Tom wondered if the finishing school had taught her to not so much as flinch at the rough stone, or blink at the velvet curtains. Women who had spent longer on the frontier could keep their displeasure and astonishment silent, but seldom more.
Feeling awkward, he sat opposite her.
"I wonder if they needed curtains here when there was only one piece of cloth large enough to make them," she said.
"No one knows," said Tom.
"That's odd. Velvet doesn't last forever. It can't have been that long."

The walls, barely worked stone, looked like she would have expected, but Lieutenant Smith led her to a niche where red velvet curtains were held back by golden cord. She glanced them over. At first she thought they would have been old and worn, but no, they looked fairly new. The window, with its circular patterns and yellow and orange inset, was at least explained by its visibility from the outside.
She sat, and Lieutenant Smith sat opposite.
"I wonder if they needed curtains here when there was only one piece of cloth large enough to make them," she said.
