Title: Tending the Fire
Sometimes, when he was away, and when the fire keepers weren't looking, Laurentius tinkered with the bonfire. Often he just stoked it up a little more, in the hope that at least some genuine warmth and life would seep into the undead hero's body and soul. When he had time, he left messages in the shapes of the flames. Even though they could move and change, there wasn't enough space or time to leave whole sentences, so they'd developed codes that meant something only to each other, often images rather than words. Later he'd be lectured about the dangers of interfering with that primal, fundamental magic, banned from going anywhere near the bonfire for a while. The fire keeper had other places to be, though, so he couldn't really police the ban. Besides, Laurentius knew fire. It was worth the danger to see the other man's smile when he returned.
