The house on the lake had everything a dog might need, especially a dog with greying hair who mostly liked to keep to himself and who found the peace and quiet vital to his meditation. Age had yet to diminish his sense of smell at all, one side-effect of his constant rigorous sniff-mastery training. He could still smell the different types of fish that lived in the vast, calm lake, well enough to know when best to cast out a fishing rod on the pier around the back of his house, on the little lakeside patio he'd built. There was a bug tank, too, for when he went on one of his many roams around the countryside, catching bugs and sniffing out herbs for medicinal recipes. He'd never had children but sometimes his relatives brought their own children for early training. He always appreciated the visits. He didn't want to retire from civilisation altogether, he just needed more time and space to meditate on the hidden nature of the Universe, of the true smells of things and how they fit together. His eventual goal was to discover a way to visit the land of the Ancs and, eventually, beyond, to the vast Universe. A worthy goal for a true Sniff Master and a necessary duty for one who had already seen that the world of dogs was not the only realm and that some things out there could spell trouble. Better, he decided, to go out and meet trouble halfway.
