He was used to them whispering about him, but today he was going to give them something to really whisper about, and not just whisper. They were going to be the talk of the nation, if not the world. People were going to be screaming, scheming, cussing, denying that he'd ever helped them at all when he'd saved their lives countless times. He knew what was to come. He knew exactly what he was getting into. But he also knew it was all going to be worth it to make one point crystal clear at last, something he should have done long ago.
"Clark," Lex pondered aloud, his arms circling his younger lover's neck, "what are we doing?"
"What do you mean, Lex?" Clark asked innocently, his blue eyes shining. "We're flying."
"But why? Where are we going? Where are you taking me? They can see us, you know."
Clark shrugged his muscular shoulders. "Let them watch," he said, ignoring the fingers pointing up at them, the mouths hanging agape, and the eyes ever widening with shock. "It's not a bird or a plane or anything else they want to create with their limited minds."
Lex looked at him with not just a small amount of amazement. "I've never heard you talk so!" he exclaimed, and indeed he had not. Clark always seemed to think the world of the human race to which they both knew he didn't actually belong. He'd risked his life countless times for the very humans of whom he was now speaking with such irritation.
"You've always been afraid of what they would think," he pointed out, "if they knew we're together."
"Clark," Lex sighed, "I've explained this before. Seeing me with you will only tarnish your reputation."
"Both of our fathers were wrong in thinking a man is no better than his reputation," Clark retorted, silencing Lex and making his blue eyes widen with unspoken questions. He shrugged again. "I know they both taught it and liked that saying for different reasons, but no matter what, it's not true, and I don't care what they think."
"Since when?" Lex couldn't stop himself from asking. "And who? Your dad? Mine? The people?"
"All of the above," Clark responded without hesitation. "Lex, I love you. I have almost since the first moment we met. And I'm done hiding it. If someone comes after you, I can stop them," he spoke with bold determination. They both knew they'd each had reasons for fearing their union placing Lex's life into jeopardy, though it had been very different reasons.
"As I've always reminded you, lover, I can handle myself quite well, thank you."
"I know you can. That's only one reason why I'm not afraid any more. I shouldn't have been afraid this long to show the world I love you. If they want to accept me as their hero, they can, but only if they accept me the way I am."
Lex couldn't help the whimsical turn his smile took. His sweet, beloved Clark had always been more than a bit naive. He settled into his arms and moved to rest his head on his shoulder, but to his surprise, Clark kissed him right there above the city, while still in plain view of the crowds gathering and pointing below. "Clark -- "
"I told you, love, I'm done hiding." He silenced his protests with more kisses and continued the flight. He had put this off for far too long, and the last near call he'd had, the last time other aliens had almost not only stopped him but conquered him had served as a reminder: Even for Superman, there was only so much time. Even for them, he only had so much time to make it clear how much he loved this wonderful man in his arms. He was done hiding, and he was done letting Lex wonder if he would ever man up, as both Chloe, Alfred, and even his own dear mother once had called it, and not just profess his love but claim what was his, what he had known to be his since they'd both been mere boys.
He flew higher not to go out of sight of the humans but to carry them up to such an altitude that he could fly without having to worry too much about planes. As he passed over continent after continent, he continued to kiss his man, pledging his love to him with his lips, tongue, and fingers. He poured every bit of the love he felt for him into their passionate kiss and warm embrace. As they neared their destination, he didn't stop kissing him, but he did flip the switch for the heater Lex had found a way to have built into his leather jacket. Such temperatures as those in the land into which they were heading were too much for most humans, but for the time being, Lex scarcely noticed him, so absorbed was his in all Clark was making him feel.
He finally set them down before what looked like a giant iceberg, in a land full of mountains and ice. "Lex," he spoke gently, "what I'm about to show you I've never shown to another human being. There have been a few humans who have found their way here, but I've never invited them. I've never willingly shown them everything, anything much really." He entwined his fingers with his. "But I'm bringing you here because I'm done hiding, in all senses of the word. I want you to know everything about me. I want there to be no secrets between us ever again. I want to share everything with you."
Lex's heart was already soaring higher than the snowy clouds, but it took an even greater leap as Clark went down on one knee before him. He took both of Lex's hands in one, mighty hand and gently squeezed him. His other, with all the speed he possessed which was far faster than Lex's human gaze could follow, dipped into a pocket on his belt and emerged with a tiny, velvet box. He popped the lid open, bringing an audible gasp from Lex that made the snowy terrain tremble, and continued speaking.
"I want to share everything with you, Lex," he said again, "not just now, not just my superheroics, not just the fact that you are mine and I am yours. I want to share everything with you forever more, or at least for as long as we both shall live. I want to make this permanent and open, not in the sense that we will ever share ourselves or each other with any one else but in the sense that the whole world knows I am yours and you are mine, as we have been since we were boys. Marry me, Lex. Let's let the whole world see how much we love each other."
"YES! OH, YES, CLARK, I'LL MARRY YOU!" Lex cried, heedless of the danger they were in. He threw his arms around the only man he had ever and would ever loved and started covering his handsome, smiling face with kisses. Clark gathered Lex back into his arms with all his superspeed, snapped the box shut and slipped it back into his hiding place, and ducked them both into the safety of his fortress. Once there, however, he took his time, slowly and passionately making love to the only man who had ever and could ever complete him and showing him with actions not just words how much he loved him and always would with a love neither would ever hide again and would always, always celebrate and be thankful for.
