"Over there," said Hope, and the railings were indeed red. They picked their way over; even in the gray morning light, just enough to turn off the streetlights, the white and blue and yellow were as bright as the red.
They were not alone in the station. Cal hesitated at the top of the stair. An ordinary man -- well, carrying a backpack like a student, and bearded, but an ordinary graduate student, perhaps. He didn't even look up at them from his phone. Cal forced his breath out. He himself looked like an ordinary man. There was nothing about him to alert this man as long as he didn't sulk about and draw attention as if he were a convicted fugitive from justice. He was safer here than in his known home ground.
Hope already had picked out a bench to sit. He strode over, and found himself face to face with a poster. Between ornate columns, a thin, pale woman, wearing a sleeveless black gown, looked out. She had two crow wings behind her. His heart seemed to stop. It took him a moment to be sure that that was art, that she did not have such wings.
Though he supposed that a job in such a -- he glanced at the text -- horror-themed restaurant would be a good way to employ such wings, if you had them. He swallowed and reminded himself that a woman who got away from the lab after getting such wings would have little interest in him.
"She's too human to be out of their lab," murmured Hope.
He shrugged and sat beside her. "I turned out human enough to come to a railway station without notice. Perhaps someone could fall between me and those they got to attack me."
