"Know that you have angered the Heavens themselves. Let the laws of nature be no more and the world of Soleil come to an end."
The booming, furious voice resonated through the plaza in the sky that already crumbled to pieces, tremors and violent lightning storms ripping the fragile glass walkways apart. He saw the dragon's roaring fanged maw sink beneath the clouds, his blade embedded in the bony plates on its forehead. Like an evaporating nightmare, the world around him was being consumed by a powerful invading light and he felt as though he was falling, flung from the dream that rejected him.
He woke up with a start. He was back on the ground floor of the Tower of Babel. The stinging pain of the wounds he'd taken during the fight with the dragon told him that it hadn't been a dream. His blade rested near him, covered in ichor. He still felt the concerned telepathic prod of his animal companions; after a time, during which he was too exhausted to do much other than lie there, his dog appeared right in his face, licking his nose and whining.
"It's okay," he lied, patting the dog's curly-haired head, "Everything will be okay."
He remembered that giant gate opening, the sickening light pouring from it, the brief forbidden sights beyond it and the feeling of apocalyptic dread as the voice of a deity pronounced the world's doom. Then, when he'd finally found the way out of the tower, past the now useless machinery, he looked out of the door and saw that everything had changed.
It was not all going to be okay.
He'd live through it, though, he promised, his grip on his sword tightening, eyes narrowing in grim determination. He had his holy blade and his quest and his animal friends. It was his responsibility to fix what he'd broken and to get down to the truth of all this.
His first task was to make sure his family were still okay, so he boarded the dinosaur and began the long journey across the sea back to Soleil Town.
