"Besides, you ought to see the lands to the southeast," said Karl. "What if the king sends you there? You could get lost, and a dragon could burn a dozen villages and fly off before you arrived."
"There's not much trouble in the southeast," said Sven.
"A knight has to be ready for it wherever it comes," said Karl, and strode from the hall, calling for their horses.

They galloped for a time, but less when they reached the southeast, and its hills. Sven looked about, diligently.
What struck him was not the lack of trouble, but the green.
The streams were rivulets of silver among the hills, which were otherwise green. There was a patchwork of dark and paler where the clouds shadowed the hills, and where the sun broke through, but even the bridge, covered with moss, was green.
