“Mulder, look at the windows,” Scully whispered, shifting her gun in her hand.
Mulder squinted through the growing dusk. “They’re bricked up … from the inside.” The hike to the site had taken longer than expected and they had arrived too late for full sunlight.
Scully nodded grimly. “If our informant is right that’s where he’s keeping it, away from view.”
Mulder craned his neck to look at the side of the building. “I don’t see how. It isn’t big enough -.”
Suddenly, there was a deep throbbing sound, right at the bottom edge of human hearing. It shook the leaves on the trees and shattered the remaining glass in the windows. Scully rose from her crouch, already in forward motion as she yelled, “Come on, Mulder! He’s getting away!” She sprinted forward before Mulder could stop her.
There was a deep tearing sound and two things happened, seemingly simultaneously. The building collapsed into itself and a light brighter and colder than anything Mulder had ever experienced before enveloped the entire area for a moment. For several long moments, temporarily blinded by the flash, all Mulder could do was listen. He heard the sounds of wood cracking, bricks sliding across each other, and uneven footsteps. “Scully?” he called. “Are you OK?”
As his vision cleared, he could see her blurry form standing on what had been the apex of the roof, staring at the dark sky. “Scully?” He walked forward gingerly. “You’ve had a tetanus shot recently, right?” He kicked aside a board that had squared off rusted nails stabbed through it.
She nodded abruptly, then returned her frustrated glare at the sky. “We were so close, Mulder. So close to getting an answer.”
