Halley double-checked the post office box number. She wondered how many packages it go, and whether the lords and ladies of Faerie had many. But she was dithering.
Out of the oak tree by the nearest door. Down the path. Take every third left. Walk out onto a grassy lawn where a couple had spread a blanket. Their picnic basket stood to one side, but now they just lay there, laughing and chatting, and Halley turned her attention back to the path. She should not find ordinary clothes odd. She had only been in Faerie for weeks. . . .
At least the weather was unseasonably mild. She hurried on toward a grove of tree. Where a firepit had a fire, and two women in sweaters talked together over a mug of something steaming, with a thermos besides them. And past the trees, she walked from a path onto a sidewalk, and the teaming streets.
Well, not teaming. Many people were inside. And she had seen crowds even thicker in Faerie. And. . . .
She walked up to the library. Some kind of clinic was going on. An old woman sat with her grown-daughter. Two men were intent, respectively, on a laptop and a phone.
But whoever it was could not help her. She walked by. Shelves and shelves of books, where she could find the ones she wanted lay behind, covers bright or drab, marked with titles. Marked with Dewey Decimal Numbers.
She would get some after. But first -- she sat at one of the terminals. Her heart hammered as she logged on with the id Artos had given her. She ignored the suggestions based on what "she" had previously bought, and instead searched to order a complete catalog of the Dewey Decimal System.
Minutes later, she winced at the price, reminded herself that she wasn't paying, and ordered. Then she logged out and went for a reward of novels.
