Title: After The Rain

The cobalt blue clouds were receding. A rainbow was arching down toward the hillside where the few trees had persisted, and -- the hillside was alive with green.
Lieutenant Smith laughed. "Give a few more hours, and it will be more colorful than the rainbow, what with all the flowers fiercely pouncing on the rainwater."
"You won't see it," said Colonel Gold, coming up behind them.
Rose turned to face him.
His face looked graven in granite. "Of the children who went gallivanting off, I have little hope. I will not be able to send search parties soon, and it's likely they can not work out where to search, and that there is no point to it. The other children, however, went down to the aspen grove. We've seen them running about. And we ran out the boats at the boathouse." He spread his hands. "Miss Jackson, I would be grateful if you assisted the lieutenant and the soldiers."
She nodded. "It's getting late for them to be out."
He smiled. "There's another tunnel."
This one, it turned out, did not have so many spider webs, but it had many stairs, and the sky was turning as many shades as an opal as she came out after the soldiers. The abrupt lake reflected them back, and they even colored the deck and the boats.
"Take all of them," Lieutenant Smith ordered. "We need to bring back the children."
