A house appeared ahead of them. The wood was weathered, vines overgrew it, and windows were bricked up. Lilac's nose twitched at the sight of that, and none of them said a word as they walked by it, and through the scrubby trees. The path went on straight, without a single curve.
A house appeared ahead of them. The wood was weathered, vines overgrew it, and windows were bricked up. Lilac stopped in her tracks. Carolus looked about as if wondering what tree to blaze. William walked up to the door, and knocked.
It opened.
Inside was dark and set with stone pillars. A thin, salt-white woman, with black and wearing a black sleeveless dress, looked out with accusing eyes. Black glossy wings extended from her back.
She shifted -- the wings were not attached to her. And then a black vulture glared at them. Lilac's tongue touched her lips as she wished the woman had been winged.
