Title: Sitting In A Tree
The little house overlooked the river that led down into the nearby sea, just like most of the houses in this district of the Werites Beacon. It was usually unlocked but also abandoned - Will had never seen anybody go near it. Sometimes, when he opened the door, there was a faint splashing and the back window would be open. However, when he ran to look out of the window, or down the length of the river bank, he didn't see any signs of someone having jumped down there. Maybe they were just too fast. Probably a Ferines, then. Unless this was an elaborate ruse and they were waiting in the cupboard, occasionally throwing things down there to put him off their scent...
"Get down from there," the Sheriff warned, thumping the palm tree trunk. First Norma fell out with a curse and a thud, then Moses sprang out from a higher branch, quite deliberately landing on her. From the expressions on their faces, neither one of them had known the other were there.
"Thought you wanted to know what was in there," muttered Norma, dusting herself down.
"With a proper search warrant, yes, not just... hiding in trees like monkeys."
"Don't call me a monkey!" yelled Norma, screeching and flailing her arms in an almost perfect impression of a monkey.
"You're never gonna find out who it is if you don't let us help," Moses declared, yawning and stretching. He whistled for his dog to jump down from the tree, then casually sauntered off.
"Anyone else up there?" demanded Will.
"Not that I know of," said Norma, glaring at Moses and sticking her tongue out at the bandit's retreating back for good measure.
"Okay, I've got an actual case for us, some monster extermination," he said, grabbing her arm before she could escape from the threat of work.
Up in the top bough, nestled carefully inside the palm fronds, Grune yawned and went back to sleep.
